Question
My 18 month old anatolian was brought up on lamb and rice and I continue this with Californial Natural. She has developed very itchy skin and I've been trying some varying additions like baked sweet potato, and carrots plus olive oil and occasional raw egg. But my online research confuses me with various warnings about giving too much in vitamins and protein. Are these extra foods okay? She loves them.

Answer
Good morning, Pat.

Adding some extra protein is a fine thing to do.  California Natural, while it is a nice food, is quite high in carbohydrates and fairly low in protein.  You may consider looking for a food higher in meat protein.

Adding too many extras to a food can throw off the nutritional balance so you'll want to be careful about that.

Again, California Natural is a fairly high carbohydrate food.  Considering this, I would not add any other carbs to her diet, including sweet potatoes.

If you are inclined to keep her on this food, I would add a good quality canned meat diet, such as Evo or Nature's Variety Instinct to increase the amount of protein in her diet.

You can also add a good quality fish body oil (ie. Sea Pet or similar products).  This will, often times, help with itchy skin problems.

Good luck and do let me know if you need further help.
