Diabetic dog diet

Question
Hello
A few days ago my 7 year old Lhasa Apso was diagnosed with Diabetes Millitus. He was actually in diabetic ketoacidosis so things were pretty serious but he really seems to have come around and is doing well. I adopted him at the age of 5. I have to admit that I babied him a lot and he got a lot of treats and human food. Since he has been diagnosed, I have put him on a strict diet of rice cooked with beef(I remove the fat), or rice with tuna, boiled eggs, cottage cheese, etc. I realize that just feeding him dog food would be easier but I do not have the money to pay 35 dollars for an 8 pound bag of dog food and quite frankly I think it is rather sad for him to eat the same old kibble every day for the rest of his life, especially now that he's not getting any treats. Anyways. I am not sure how much to feed him. At the moment, he is around 21-22 pounds but he is a bigger lhasa so he looks quite slim. I plan on feeding him a half a cup at about 6:30 am and again at 6:30 pm. Is this enough? The little guy always seems to be looking for something on the floor to eat, but I don't know if the hunger is caused by the diabetes or because I am not feeding him enough. Also, what other foods would you recommend for a diabetic dog?
Thank you for your time!

Answer
Hi -- Well, your diet doesn't look bad at all.  How about adding a supplement to the program... This is much needed to balance out the home cooking.
As for amounts of food :

Make sure this baby has at least 1 full egg or 1/2 cup of cooked meat ( yes- low fat)...

You can also off some green beans - the canned kind with no added salt.  Just put a dash of garlic powder and a dash of olive oil --- mix and off at least 1/4 cup or a little more.

Cottage cheese can be 1/4 cup of 2 % milk fat.....
Yogurt - low fat  ( 1/4 to 1/2 cup per day )
Don't do cottage cheese and yogurt on the same day.  ( too much milk products)

Call the NuVET Folks for the Supplement / IT will help Curve the Appetite and digest foods better.  HOLISTIC and very safe... NO sugar - all natural
Call 1-800-474-7044    ( use order discount code  (81098) and ask for 15% off)
Tell them Pet Nurse Marie sent you.
They have a wafer or powder / VERY good taste
39.00 and 55.00 per bottle
The 39.00 bottle will last you 2 months.
The 55.00 bottle will last you 3 months.
YOU can't do home cooking without a good balance in vitamins and supplements.
I don't want to see this kid get other problems because a lack of vitamins.
HOPE you understand

YOUR dog should have 1/2 to 3/4 a cup of food 2 x per day.
In the afternoon there should be a snack.  Innova EVO has a nice Grain free dog food.  YOU could use 5-10 bites as a snack in the afternoon... It comes in Small bites - you can find this at a quality pet store... MUST be the EVO - small bites

BEST wishes
HOPE this has helped
