Question
My Shih Tzu will be 3 in May and I want to breed her; what is the best for to prepare her for babies/of just to have a healty diet regardless. She loves Beneful soft food. Is that okay?

Answer
Actually Beneful is terrible and for the price it's highway robbery. Nothing you can buy at the grocery store or any of the chain discount stores, such as wally world, is worth putting out money on. Stay away from food with by products, wheat, corn, soy, bha and bht. You're paying for fillers and things your dog cannot digest when you purchase foods with those ingredients. Go to a pet store or purchase online. Innova is a good food. Royal Canine is another. They are pricey but since you're paying for things your dog actually digests and utilizes, rather than what she deposits for you to clean up, in the long run the value is much smarter. And she will eat less, get better digestiblity and be healthier. There are alot of good foods out there, Blue is another one. Go to a pet store and read your lables :). I also like Chicken Soup for the dog lovers soul. Also be sure that she is up to date on vaccinations, gets booster shots a couple of months PRIOR to breeding her, has a vet visit to be sure her heart, and general health is good, be sure that the male you choose has done the same, and that he has a recent (within ten days) negative brucellosis test. If you haven't looked into genetic health testing for both your bitch and the stud,. I have to advise you to do that as well. Be sure that she is parasite free, and on heartworm prevention. You want to give both her, and the pups the best start possible.
Good luck and enjoy the puppy breath!
