Question
Hi, i have a 2 year old golden retriever. According to the standard weight charts, he is obese.(you cant feel the ribs)We are feeding him Beneful. My parents always tend to give him some human food whenever they eat(especially lunch/dinner). Should we ban human food in efforts to reduce weight? The food varies anywhere from chips to rice. I think so.

Answer
Yes you should absolutely cut out the human food...and the Beneful. A good dog food should contain meat or meat meal, no wheat, soy, corn, no BHA and no BHA...and not multiple types of the same food ie rice flour, rice gluten, rice bran.
Your fist step should be to see your dr. At two your dog shouldn't be overweight. There are health problems that can cause obesity in dogs, make sure it isn't one of them. If not then have your vet set up a caloric intake schedule for you. Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Calorie Control is a great reduced calorie food. Measure using a measuring cup to get the appropriate amount., Be sure your dog is getting enough water, and start exercising. Walk to start out with as far your dog can walk comfortably in thirty minutes starting out slowling building speed and then slowing down again on the way home. Once a day for a week., then twice, your distance should increase as your dog begins to feel better and gain strength. When he is down on weight some and in better shape play with him several times a week until his tongue hangs out. Play ball, take him to the doggie park, put him on a treadmill, put a ball on a tether pole in the back yard. He'll go nuts over that. Swimming is of course AWESOME too.
Good luck and good for you for seeking solutions
