QuestionI have a seven-year old retriever mixed breed named Sandy who our vet prescribed a diet of a commercial low-protein dry dog food. She has no current kidney problems, but he thought she could have in the future.
I would like to supplement her diet with a homemade dog food of rice, vegetable oils and some meat products. I keep reading contradicting opinions as to what oils or meats are good for dogs and would appreciate advise on which would be OK along with the low-protein dog food as a kind of treat.
AnswerGood afternoon, George.
Did the vet indicate why he thought she might have kidney problems in the future? I'll be honest and say that is a bit odd to assume unless some testing revealed otherwise.
You can, indeed, supplement her diet. For oil, fish body oil, such as a good quality salmon oil, is always a good thing to add, and can be beneficial to the kidneys.
As far as other add ins, before suggesting anything, I would like to know for certain if your vet has a particular reason for thinking kidney problems may develop.
