Question
can a good quality dog food be too rich for them. i have a 5 mo old rotty. got him at 14 wks old. kennel had him on eukanuba. we put him on natures recipe, on to blue buffalo, now on to natural balance. trying to get rid of giardia, and the better the food, the worse the poop. "cow patties" to diarrhea. talked to vet abt this, waiting for at least 30 days til i send the next sample to vet. give pumpkin w/food to help firm up stool. started w/natural balance, 2-1 ratio- and its running out of him.is a cheaper made dog food better for him. i've spent days, hrs trying to find solutions online. i get home from work, 1st stool is firm. by the time he finishes, its loose.we've done the gradual changing of food. did well on chic/rice. thats the hardest we've seen. help!!! (or we'll go broke at the vets lol)

Answer
You can't get rid of ghiardia with food. Pick a good food, Blue buffalo, Natural Balance either one are great and stick with it. Dog food changes can also cause runny poop. As can stress, and changesin water.
Give him acidophlous supplements, plain all natural yogurt, and yes canned pumpkin with his food for now. Have you treated him with flagyl? Five days of panacur? That should take care of the ghiardia. :)
Good luck and hang in there!

PS you can give liquid or tablet immodium also to help through this
