My Dog Doesnt Chew Her Food!

Question
I have a 4 month old siberian husky puppy who just inhales her food. She is
currently being fed Eagle Pack Small & Medium Breed Puppy Formula
although I am planning on switching her to the Large & Giant Puppy Formula
once she finishes her current bag (is this advisable?) as I think she has been
growing too fast (too tall for her age in my opinion). My problem is, she
hardly chews her food. The Medium Puppy Formula kibble is tiny so maybe
that makes her think she doesn't need to chew her food? She chews maybe
once in every ten mouthfuls but more often than not, she just swallows her
food whole to the point that she sometimes chokes on her food. She's not a
very voracious eater though, she doesn't eat like she's starving, she eats at a
normal pace but JUST DOESN'T CHEW. What can I do to get her to start
chewing her food? Thank you!

Answer
That is a common problem with Labs. Even if she isn't eating rapidly, slowing her down may help.  There are not one, but 2 easy, tested, effective ways to control it. You can spread the food out on a cookie sheet or something. Some of my friends just throw it on the floor of the crate. You can put large rocks in the food dish, much to big to swallow. Either way, the dog can't gulp down one big mouthful after another.   Doing so will at least eliminate the choking, but I am not sure if they will still do that much chewing.  They do fine not chewing their food.  They do lose the benefits of teeth cleaning and jaw exercise that feeding dry should give.

It is a well proven technique to switch a growing puppy to a less rich chow to slow growth allowing more time for the joints to develop.  The small and medium breed chow may have been on the rich side for her.  I would discontinue it when the bag is empty as you plan.  You may want to go to the adult rather than the large and giant puppy chow.  There may not be that much difference in them.
