Question
Hi Ms.Peppers,
I have 2 dogs,a long hair Chihuahua and a long hair Dachshund/Papain(I'm guessing). My Dash has all the problems of a Dachshund: back problems and he has already tore his ACLs in both of his back legs at age 3. He will be 7 in June. My Chi is 5 and she has always had a hard time potty #2 and always seems to have gas in her little belly. They both weigh about 10-11 lbs. I'm trying to find the perfect, healthy diet for them. I've tried the Blue Buffalo and they both got really really sick on it. I guess it was to strong for them. They are just now getting off of the prescription diet the vet put them on to get their little system straight again. The Doc said I can put them on regular food now BUT WHICH ONE? I just recently put them on Bil-Jac because I was impressed by the way it broke up in water thinking it would be easy to digest and pass. But now I'm hearing bad and good things about it. I've been thinking about Royal Canin for specific breed. What do you think about that or do you have a better suggestion? (It will get pretty expensive buying 2 different bags of dog food) Also I've started giving both of them a hip & joint supplement called Cosequin recommended by a veterinarian. The closest pet store is Petsmart and they don't carry some of the foods that have been suggested.  Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sharon
PS: These are my only kids and I only want the best for them and to keep them around, healthy, & happy as long as possible! Please help if you can...

Answer
Hello Sharon:  Yes, I understand your concern about dog food choices.
So many to choose from ....
Here are a few ideas for you and your kids.

You can get some Chicken Soup for the Dog lover's Soul - This is a dry dog food.  Another good one is the Merrick dog foods.

Recipe:
You may want to try some home cooking /  freeze it up 1 x per week.  It will be great for your little Chi's belly.

Buckaroo's Favorite Meat

1 pound hamburger
1 clove pressed or finely-chopped garlic * ( YOU can omit this)
- ( if you are taking the supplement)
1 cup oatmeal
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup fresh Romaine lettuce leaves (eyeball it)

Slowly cook the hamburger in a large skillet with the garlic.

Add oatmeal and water and stir while bringing to a boil Turn down the
heat, cover and simmer for 1 minute.

In a blender or food processor, puree the lettuce or chop finely (may
also be juiced). Let hamburger mixture cool before adding lettuce.

Serve a mixture of all ingredients at 1/2 cup for every 10 pounds of
dog's body weight.
Don't give the chi too much lettie.........

The hamburger/oatmeal mixture may be stored in freezer or
refrigerator in individual portions. GET individual FREEZER baggies - Works Great : Just cook this up 1 x per week....Make enough for the whole week.

Keep the lettuce stored separately in refrigerator to serve fresh with every meal as a salad.

YOU can add some green beans and carrots a few times per week. Don't give peas too often, just 1x per week is fine.

Also, a good Salmon oil / pure salmon oil / add 1 tablespoon per day to his food.
YOU can find salmon oil at most pet stores.

There are other oils I can offer you ....JUST ask.

Continue with the Consequin for your little ones... Good product.
