Question
I just adopted an old (8-10 yrs, not known)Golden, she's wonderful! HOWEVER, she is tearing herself raw. Licks her feet constantly, scratches non-stop, and her ears, her ears? Yuck! They are horribly smelly and are infected, my Vet. says for many years, as the cartiledge is solid.
Can you recommend anything more than: she's on antibiotics, twice daily; has Gentizol drops,5-6 twice daily, and Pledgets for her feet, none of which have helped during the four days I have (diligently) used them. Am I expecting too much, too soon?
Is there a topical I can use?
I have tried 'Chlorohexederm'
Anything you can suggest would be gratefully received!
Thank you so much!

Answer
Hi Vicki,

Blessings to you for adopting a senior! I rescued an 8 year old female Ridgeback last summer and she is just a darling - I love the old ones, myself. But, they do present with certain challenges, depending on breed and the quality of their previous care.

What concerns me most about this dog - and what I am able to help with -  is her diet. What are you feeding her? Many of the dogs I work with start out exactly like this girl, but with some dietary changes and supplements, are able to reduce symptoms to the point medication is no longer necessary. Start by letting me know what you feed her, and I'll make some suggestions acordingly.

PS - I plan to put before- and -after pictures on my website soon - my own and dogs. My RR had lesions all over her feet and legs which cleared up in 3 months entirely strictly as a result of dietary adjustment. Food is powerful medicine. :)

All the best, Catherine
