Diet for Lhasa Apso

Question
I just adopted a male about 6 years old and what kind of diet would be best for him they fed Science Diet and gave me a bag when I left the shelter, is there something else I should know to feed. First time owner of this breed.

Answer
Unless he has some physical problem a vet links to his diet, I would stick to the Science, the same formulation if Science offers other than the lamb I know they do.  While dog nutrition is too complex for the average dog owner to formulate their own diet, it is well known and all but the cheapest commercial dog chows provide about the same thing.  Contrary to what you read, most dogs will thrive on most chows.  If your dog eventually develops an allergy to lamb, you can easily work around it by switching to a chicken or beef formulation.

Adopting an older dog is often a wise choice.  Puppies require large amounts of time and money.  Trust me, we have our 18'th since 1991.  A 6 year old Lhasa Apso should have many good years left with good care.  Some times they have problems from their former home.  Don't hesitate to post back with any ones you have.  I encourage people to adopt, and make a special effort to give them any help they need.  Since you are new to the dog world, I will paste in some material.  It is meant for new puppies, but should be useful to you too.

Oh, be careful of his weight.  Evaluate the dog as illustrated in this link, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  You may want the vet to confirm your judgment. Adjust the dogs food and exercise as needed to reach its ideal body condition.
