Question
Hi there, just wondering about a newer type of food I came across, both my Bichon and Chihuahua liked it very much but neither will eat it now,  It is called Taste Of The Wild, I got it at a pet supply store and they push the product as being the best, but then don't they all??  If you can get any info on this it would be great thanks

Answer
Hi Kim,

Well first of all, there is no suhc thing as "one best food". All commercial foods pose problems (gluten, flax, questionable ingredients, heated oils, citric acid, and on and on) and we have to hedge our bets a little. The ultimate "best" food for an individual dog is a properly formulated, homemade diet using the best possible ingredients. Taste of the Wild is no different, better or worse, than any other premium dog food; it has it's strengths, and it has it's weaknesses.

What I like about it:

1) a nice variety of ingredients, not always relying on the same over-used foods
2) it's gluten free
3) vitamin and mineral supplements are all high quality

What I don't like:

1) Marketing Hype, but then I always dislike that
2) Possible ethoxyquin contamination
3) unidentified fish source
4) Fat and protein potentially too high for some dogs

Overall, this food is nice enough - I mean it's better than Beneful - but there are better ones. If I wouldn't feed it to my own dog, I won't recommend it to others. And this one, I'd take a pass on. If I used it at all, I'd need a company guarantee that the food did NOT contain ethoxyquin - and, I'd still only use it as part of the diet.

Hope this helps a bit, Catherine
