QuestionHi, I am from a small town in South Africa. My 13 year old Maltese was recently diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. She is not doing very well but I want to give her the very best chance to live with this disease. Our local vet prescribed Hills k/d but I do not believe that it is the only available treatment. I need to know what home made foods and also what supplements can I feed her. What are your opinion of the pet food the vet prescribed?
AnswerHello Ronel - Yes - you can give a special diet for kidney failure:
here are a few recipes to try:
HOPE this helps
Kidney recipe for dogs:
The Key is :
***Frequent feedings of high quality simple carbohydrates such as white rice and potatos.
~~~normal amounts of protein should be fed as protein is needed by the liver during repair.
Soy protein and milk proteins are helpful..
Hamburger, Drained ( or another meat is fine)
(* not too much chicken)
~No liver or organ meats...
Boiled eggs without the yokes..
Unprocessed BROWN Rice.. or White rice...
*mixed daily with some cottage cheese or "soy" plain yogurt.
YOU don't have to use soy but it is good ...
Also, make sure you add some x-tra water to each dish - Water will help the kidney to function.
( This recipe is a good start - You can also do ground chicken or lamb rather than the hamburger)
SUPPLEMENT:
Look for a good canine supplement - liquid or powder / give daily
I am sure your Maltese will love you cooking for her!
