Nursing on flank

Question
Hi Susan,
I have a rescued 1 year old doberman pinscher who tends to occasionally "nurse"
on his flanks when he is in his kennel.  We have tried bitter apple spray,
recommended by our trainer, and it sometimes works.  Do you know why he
does this? No other behavioral problems.

Answer
Nursing on onesself is usually a sign of stress or boredom. I am not an expert in the behavioral department but this is something I know happens with Dobies in particular. I would recommend more exercise, toys, more stimulation to start. If this doesn't help the problem then I think you need to see an animal behaviorist since this flank sucking can be a sign of OCD in dogs and you want to nip this behavior in the bud. Please let me know how things go. Susan
