Selling home baked pet treats at the Farmers Market

18 17:23:31

Question
I have been baking organic pet treats for my 3 pugs and have been told by friends that they are good (human grade) enough to sell at the local Farmers Markets. Besides listing all the ingredients on the package are there any permits or requirements such as a commercial kitchen involve?. What about recipes I use for baking such treats, do I have to worry about protecting my recipe? I know many people who bake for flea markets but not for dogs, they use tried and true recipes for tier baked goods. So does that apply for dog baked goods as well?
Also, should I worry about liabilities for using peanut butter or animal by products such as cheese, etc?

Answer

Edna, Let me know if you start this pet treat business.  I am sure many of my readers would like to know how to start this up.
Good idea for moms that want to stay home and make money.

Hi Edna - Well, you have a great idea for baking organic treats!  Most states will have this info on the Board of Health web site.  You may be able to cook the treats in your own kitchen.
As for liability insurance, you can look into it.  It shouldn't cost too much for what you need it for.  You can buy all Levels of insurance.  CAll around - you have many questions to ask your local officials.
Don't give up !  Keep your chin up and do your homework.

BEST wishes on this!
