Dry vs. Wet

Question
What is your opinion on dry food vs. wet food?  We have a 4 month old puggle.  We originally had her on dry food, but she encountered some stomach problems, and the vet prescribed her a specific type of wet food for a week that would help with her stomach problems.  Since then, we switched to wet food, which she LOVES...she responds to it much more than she ever did with the dry.

We are using Science Diet right now, but assuming a wet food diet is ok, is there a particular brand that would be best?  Price is no obstacle.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
The dry dog foods are actually better for the dogs. It helps keep the teeth clean, and exercises the jaws and teeth. Another advantage is th ease of measuring out just what the dog needs.  Overfeeding is one of the biggest health problems for dogs.  Even at 4 months, your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. I would work with your vet on selecting a dry chow that wouldn't create stomach troubles for her.  Contrary to much of the marketing hype you may hear, there is no proof that dogs do better on the premium chows.  There is much more evidence that dogs do very well on the common brands such as Science Diet, Pro Plan, Iams, etc.
