Question
I am in the process of buying a 8 week old German Shepherd dog from an experienced Schutzhund trainer.  They recommend and use Royal Canin dog food.  They belive that it is best food this breed and help with their stool and their senitive stomach. I was told that this feed was not the best because of the corn, and wheat in it.
I was also told to go with a better food like Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature's Variety, Nature's Logic.  This will help with their joints and bones. I am looking for something that wont break the bank, but wont harm the dog.
I apologize for asking you a simple question like this, but I would like to know from an expert.

Thank you and have a happy holiday,

Answer
Don't apologize at all, Tom.

For the long term health and the proper growth and development of your pup, you do indeed want to make sure you are giving a good quality food.
You will want to feed a meat based food with proper calcium levels for a growing large breed pup.  To achieve this, you can look at a good large breed puppy formula such as Innova, Orijen or Eagle Pack.  If you'd rather feed an adult food, that would be fine as long as it is a food formulated for all life stages and has proper calcium levels.

As you look at different foods, please feel free to email me with any questions or if you are uncertain if the food you are looking at is appropriate for your pup.

Take care and good luck with the new pup.
