Liver disease in a small cross Maltese; liver canine recipes; liver disease cooking for your dog;

Dear Nurse Marie,I am calling from Johannesburg, South Africa. Katy has just been diagnosed with liver disease after she suffered a seizure on 18 July 2009 and had a blood test done.  She is 10 years old -The vet also diagnosed a heart murmur.  He has prescribed Hills L/D but I would rather cook her food.  Do you have a recipe for a natural diet for her. She weighs about 3 kgs  I don't think one can get Nu-Vet products in South Africa. Do you recommend that I give her Milk Thistle and if so, what dosage?  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi - sorry, you are right about NuVET they can't service South Africa because of Customs problems in your country.
Yes, I have some recipes for dogs with liver disease.

The Key is :
Frequent feedings of high quality simple carbohydrates such as white rice and potatos.  
~~~normal amounts of protein should be fed as protein is needed by the liver during repair. Soy protein and milk proteins are helpful..

Hamburger, Drained  ( or another meat is fine)  
~No liver or organ meats...
Boiled eggs without the yokes..  *( NO Yokes)
Unprocessed BROWN Rice..  or White rice...
mixed daily with some cottage cheese or "soy" plain yogurt.
YOU don't have to use soy but it is good ...

SUPPLEMENT:  ( Find One in your **Country / So Africa)
Also, 1/2 a NuVET wafer per day for your yorkie..
