Question
i have a four month old lab pup (male. i used o give him Royal Canin Maxi Junior32 diet. it gives a very good growth but after three four days, his eyes starts becoming red and after stopping the food, again after three/four days his eyes gets clear. what should i do? i wish to continue the fodd as it has otherwise yeilded remarkable result so far it relates to his growth.

Answer
I would discontinue it.  No matter what they are fed, dogs will reach their genetically programmed size sooner or later.  Puppy chow uses the same science that puts an abundance of affordable meat on our tables through rapid growth.  Unfortunately, the faster dogs grow, the more strain it puts on developing joints.  Too much and too rich of a diet can lead to hip dysplacia.  Yes, it is largely genetic, but diet is a factor you can control now.  The best thing to do now is keep him lean and switch to an adult chow making sure it has less that 1.5% actual calcium Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. The early switch to adult chow is a standard practice for the service dogs schools.  They have more experience than anyone, including thousands of Labs.  They breed their own puppies, oversee raising them, and X-Ray every one at a year old.  Any scoring less than OFA good aren't suitable to be working dogs and are given away.
