Question
Hi there.... my son just got a pomeranian from some folks who had to give it away due to having a baby... it is 1 year old and he is doing well at his new residence, but seems to be unable to have a bowel movement in the past 2 days.... is this typical perhaps to a new environment and family ???

Answer
Some times dogs can be particular about where they have bowel movements.  My guess is the change is too much for him.  Take him outside on a leash and walk him around. The can't walk and hold it very long.  He should start sniffing and running in little circles and then have a bowel movement.

If he still hasn't done anything by Monday, consider taking him to the vet.  Constipation is unusual in dogs.  When it happens, usually it isn't anything a laxative will help.  One could cause problems.  It is better not to give a laxative until a vet has examined the dog and determined it is safe.
