High Potassium levels

Question
My Cocker Spaniel is 14 years old. The last 2 years his potassium blood levels have been on the rise. The most recent on was 7.1. He's been tested for Addisons and cushings and they are negative. His BUN is a little elevated my vet said because his creatnine is normal, he does not have a kidney problem. He also said the potassium is not high enough to worry and he's not recommending a diet change at this time. I would like to add foods to a homecooked meal that would possibly help lower this potassium level. Do you have any suggestions? His liver enzymes have also been elevated for 3 years now but with a vitamin especially for liver support it has gotten a lot better.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
Mary

Answer
Hi there,
I know a LITTLE about this situation but after my suggestions I want you to contact my mentor and friend whom I credit with saving my YOrkies digestive life. She will help you in a big and more expert way, THAT I PROMISE YOU. When you write, tell her that Sue Behlmar (Dixie, Buddy and Henry's Mom) gave you her address and in the subject line let her know it's important. She WILL get back to you if she is in the country and not traveling, lecturing on organic and holistic diets. Her address is: DoniaSea@aol.com

Ok,there are certain veggies and fruits that you must avoid--that are high in potassium. YOu can google this and find out which ones. Bananas and avocados come to mind. Be sure to wash all fruits and veggies very, very well as this eliminates a lot of potassium. Calcium and garlic help to lower potassium also but don't use a heavy hand with these. Is your pup on a digestive enzyme and probiotic??

It sounds like he is doing pretty well for his age so I wouldn't do anything too drastic at this stage. Just find out which foods are low in potassium and begin to add these to his regular food...albeit slowly. Stay close to your vet and your pooch should be fine.

P.S. Please add extra water to all of his food and consider cranberry supplements too. There is afood cslled SOJO and another called NUVET that I think you should check out as they seem to bre helpful for dogs with your little one's problems. Let me know. Sue
