food intollerance/allergy

QUESTION: I have a 8+ year old pitbull who has developed an intollerance or allergy to certain foods.  Actually it would seem he is unable to digest fat.  He has had his spleen removed too and I wonder if it is related to that.  After trying a few different foods we have settled on Scientce Diet RD.  It helped to relieve his gassy symptoms for awhile, But now It almost seems like he is developing an allergy to this food also.  He is getting gassy again and I can hear and feel almost a constant gurgling.  And he is painful and moans and groans.  I think my vet thinks I am like a doggie hypocondriach (sp?).  My dog is very stoic at the vet's  office, so he doesn't seem painful when palpated.  Anyway Is there something I feed him that does not have fat that is commercially made that will help?  Or do you have any suggestions?

I'm sorry your Pitbull is having such a hard time.  We have had several Pitbulls and, unfortunately, all had allergy issues.

Before changing foods around too much, I would first try a probiotic & digestive Enzyme supplement and see if that helps his digestion.  You can also add ground fennel seeds to help the gastric distress.

Have you considered a home prepared diet for him?

QUESTION: I have considered a home prepared diet but was afraid he would not be getting all the nutrients etc. that he needs.  He also has cushings syndrome, but a rarer form than most.He is being treated organically for that, (melatonin & flaxseed oil - though he seems to have difficulty digesting the flaxseed oil)  Is there a home-prepared  diet you could suggest?
