Question
Dear Marie:
My Yorkie, Avery, had ammonium urate stones removed. He is now going to be tested for a liver shunt. I have tried to give him Hills U/D canned food but he won't eat it and I don't blame him. Can you suggest a diet I can make for him myself?

Answer
Oh, poor little guy!  Here is a recipe for you to cook at home:
For dogs with stones:
I would love to help you two....
~~here are the recipes and a supplement:
~~ Works very well with many of my clients...
Most vets will Not support you on home cooking / they don't make any money on it!  ( many get 40% "mark up" on the Hill's RX diet sales)

If the UTI is under control the crystals / stones may be under control, too.  Good Cranberry and NuVET supplements will help the Urinary system stay healthy.

1 egg, large, hard-boiled
2 cups brown rice, long-grain, cooked

4 bonemeal tablets (10-grain or equivalent)
1/4 teaspoon salt substitute (potassium chloride)

Provides 730 kilocalories, 40.7 grams protein, 19.7 grams fat.

Tuna Cake - Simple Recipes For Low-Protein Dog Food

Try This Fish Recipes for Low-Protein Dog Food Ideas

One of the simplest recipes for low-protein dog food feasts includes
Tuna Cake - perfect for those dogs that are afflicted with a kidney
disease.
This might not offer an appetizing aroma, but our dogs will be
delighted with treats like these, which often take less than ten
minutes to organize.
Begin by mashing up two cans of tuna in a large bowl; add in three
cups of flour and 2 eggs.
Take equal portions of the mixture and mould into small cakes. Now
bake at a low temperature.
It's that simply and your dog will be drooling over it for days to
come.
Various other recipes for low-protein dog food similar to this can be
prepared using other varieties of fish.

Anyway - thought some of you may want to make it : I am sure you can
use wheat flour rather than white...
This is not a Wheat Free recipe...
