Question
Hello,

Is there any truth to the statement that dogs can not digest grains properly? Any scienfic evidence?

Thanks

Answer
Hi ray,

You have opened a complex and often controversial topic here. The use of grains in the canine diet has become a focal point for much debate and speculation. In scientific terms, we think more about the inclusion of carbohydrate and fiber in the diet than "grains" per se. It's a myth that dogs cannot digest carbohydrate, lathough true that they technically do not "require" it; what matters is choosing the right type in the optimal amounts, which can also vary from dog to dog.  I certainly agree that using a LOT of grain, and especially gluten grains such as wheat in the diet, is detrimental and unnecessary. However, I also feel  many have gone too far to the opposite extreme and are practically phobic about all grain. Brown rice has no gluten, is moderately fermentable (in other words, dog-friendly!) and provides myriad health benefits, if included in moderation.

In short; I feel limited use of specific grain can work for many dogs, as long as there is no allergy/intolerance present. Does this help at all? Feel free to ask for more clarification if need be, it's a lot to cover in one reply. ;)

All the best, Catherine
