Chow Chows Skin

Question
HI My cousin asked me about her Chow Chow's skin. After she was spayed, she filled out and her skin produces "beads of moisture" when you brush her that turns into a sticky whitish substance. The dog also has a different odor to her. She describes it as a "floral" smell and says it is not unpleasant. The dog used to be a fussy eater and after she was spayed she eats everything she can. I have never heard of a dog's skin producing beads of "liquid" and hope you can help me out. I like using natural remedies but I am unsure of what could be causing this. I thought that maybe it was a hormal imbalance.
I would appreciate any information you might know and natural treatment options.
Thank you so very much!

Answer
Hi Lacey,
Chows are known to have a number of health issues and several centre around coat. Have a look here for more information:

Seborrhea usually smells awful, so I'm wondering about that one, but this girl should definitely have a thyroid check.

The vet will need to run a full panel thyroid and have it assessed by Jean Dodds.  Many thyroid problems go undetected when vets olny do a quick office test. Since chows are prone to thyroid disease and this dog's condition started after her spay, I would be sure to have this looked into.

As for natural rememdies, the problem with  dispensing suggestions here is that I have no idea what's going on. Supplements should be suggested to address a specific problem, not just willy-nilly. In general, most dogs benefit from adding some fish body oil (not cod liver oil) usually about a capsule per 20 pounds body weight. Probiotics and green foods are good all around boosters for immunity. But the key to all good health is diet, and I don't know what this dog is eating. If you can let me know what her food consists of I can offer more specific ideas on how to improve it, what to add and so on.

All the best, Catherine
