Question
QUESTION: Hi Maire:

My dog, Monkey has bladder stones.  I am going to find out what kind they are.  My dog generally is fed California Natural Chicken & Rice Low fat.  My vet has just informed me the only food to dissolve bladder stones is the Hills SD.I am not an advocate of Science Diet food.  In fact I swore up and down I would never feed my dog this food.  Anyway, I understand a raw diet would actually be very good for my dog since she is has bladder stones.  I am currently feeding Monkey the Hills, only to try to dissolve the stones.  However, I do need some kind of help choosing a great food for her after the stones dissolve.  I do not want to keep her on Hills.  What type of food to you encourage me to feed her.  Do you think Evo would be a good food, since they have a kibble which is supposed to be like eating a raw food diet in kibble for.  Or do you think I should start preparing home cooked meals for her.  Help!

Thanks,

Mindy

ANSWER: Hi Mindy:  A very special Diet is in order for bladder stones.  The Hills is fine for a short period of time... It will help a bunch.
As for the future.... Don't know what to refer you to unless you can find out What kind of stone it was, is?  When you know the " make up" of the stones we can figure a home-made diet or Innova EVO.

Too soon to offer you advice ....need more info... Also, bladder stones will come back 40% of the time.  You will need to be careful on what foods your Little Monkey is on.

BEST Wishes....
Marie

QUESTION: Thanks, Marie.  I will be in touch wth you concerning Monkeys progress.  I think evo would be the way to go due to
fact it is a kibble form of food that is like eating a raw diet.  Does Evo have a lot of protein in it though?  I will find out what kind of stones she has.  I am now giving her Distilled water.  I just wish she would drink more water.

Answer
Hi Again:  Yes, evo may be good but the protein is on the higher side due to the fact that it is 99 % meats.  Still, that may be fine as long as you control the portions.
As for getting Monkey to drink more, you may try a few ice cubes in the water bowl.  Also, you can freeze small ice cubes for Monkey to eat.  You can find the small sized ice cube trays at Walmart or Target stores... ( the very small cubes may be fun to eat)
