Question
I have a 9 wk old Labrador female. I wanted to know if Nutro puppy food for large breed is a good choice. Also, is it a wise decision to skip puppy food for this type of breed due to hip/joint problems?  I would like your opinion on the best food to feed my new puppy. I have a 12 yr old lab as well & she has terrible joint trouble. Would like to avoid this if possible for the new puppy.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
In general, most dogs will thrive on most chows.  However, I have seen too many questions from those feeding Nutro and having problems, to trust it.  For more on this subject, dig into http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/articles.html

I would feed a common brand and change to an adult chow early, maybe 4 months, although from weaning is OK too.  I see well documented success following that in several large service dog schools.  They can't afford to have the puppies they breed develop joint problems.  They are also fanatical about keeping their puppies lean.  You should be feeding a puppy chow now.  Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
