my 3rd sharpei, rescue, macy has skin issues, big surprise!!) one ear is ongoing battle with yeast/ this month i am winning.she has severe flea reaction better now/advantage, she has gotten better/nutro lamb/rice but still licks paws/zones out/chewsuntil raw sometimes, want to get away from steroid, my vet sug. hillszd ultra,contains grains, input pleeze, tanks from me & macy

Hills Rx - Alternatives to the Hills z/d food ;  Yes, I sure do understand what you two are dealing with!  Oh, and yes - the z/d will be the only thing your vet will refer you to for dog food.... Just like most of the VETs, they are trained by the Hills Science Diet folks in Vet school.
Sure - here is my plan for your baby:

1.  slowly go off the Nutro and choose one of the following  grain free foods:
Innova EVO, Wellness Core, Merrick BEFORE GRAIN (ocean seafood); or the Canadie grain free-  also, Solid gold may have a grain-free,too......
If you can't find any of the ones I suggested, let me know- I have more:
Do a 50:50 mix of the Nutro and the NEW food for at least 3 weeks.  After that, you can go 100% to the new grain free feeding.
(* your baby many have Environmental allergies, too)

2.  Next, I would like you to go and get some Acidophilus 1 billion CFUs and give 2 per day for TEN days.  AFTER that, give 1 per day - long term.  ( acidophilus can be found at a health store or on-line)
VERY SAFE - made for humans but thousands of pets take it too......

3.  Also, I would like to see if you can find some PURE salmon oil - give your dog 1-2 tablespoons per day - just mix into the food.
If the stools get loose, then lower the dosage of salmon oil.
Must be PURE salmon oil....WE like the Grizzley Brand
