Picking and eating everything on the ground

Question
Sometimes I have a feeling that my dog will eat the road :). I
see that you have trained guide dogs. I assume that guide dogs
do not pick anything on the ground. Can you please give some
advice on how to do it.
My dog is 7 months old female Labrador. I plan to spay when
she is 14 months old. Thank you

Answer
The real dog guide training is done by professionals after the dog is a year old.  Those of us socializing puppies before that are expected to teach them to walk without sniffing or picking things up.  Much of dog training is disciplining yourself not to tolerate misbehavior.  The important things are consistently correcting them with a snap of the leash every time they lower their head and praising them when they are walking with their head up and a slack leash.  Like many other things, there is no secret, quick, easy way to do it.  It takes time and many corrections.
