Question

Bailey
I'm currently feeding my golden KD wet food which he is eating but I'm reading alot of controversial things about diet for a dog in kidney failure.  Can you suggest a home recipe I might try or tell me anything about raw diets?  I'm also interested in knowing what supplements and/or herbs I can try to help him.

Answer
Hi,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you but I was on the road unexpectedly. I am not a vet but here is what I know.

If your dog is not uremic(meaning very high BUN levels) then the consensus seems to be to feed a moderate amount of very high quality protein. Eggs have the highest quality protein (although egg yolks are high in phosphorus), followed by raw meat, then lightly cooked meat, then well cooked meat. The lowest quality protein comes from processed meat, as is found in commercial dog foods, and from grains.
EVen though eggs are mentioned I would avoid feeding him this as eggs sometimes have strange effects on some dogs particularly allergically. Also dogs with Kidney disease should not be eating phosphorous--lowering this level has been shown to greatly help dogs with kidney disease.

As far as supplements go, fish oil, co-Q 10, a real food probiotic and a real food vitamin could be very helpful. You want to be feeding your dog a diet that is HIGHLY DIGESTIBLE (commercial foods are crap as is the prescription food recommended by all vets--hey, they have contracts with the food they sell )and NUTRITIOUS--moderate protein, low phosphorous. Why don't you start steaming organic chicken and squash for him? Then add the supplements and voila you are done. BUT PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR VET FIRST...THE food he has your dog on is probably very easy for him to absorb and very easy on the kidneys but nutritionally it's like feeding him Twinkies. Your vet WILL NOT ADMIT THIS, HOWEVER.

My nutritional and supplement mentor would be glad to discuss all of the issues with you, IF YOU LIKE. Let me know if you would like her email and I will send it along. She got me to put my very sick Yorkie on the supplements that she represents in Oregon and the difference brought tears to my eyes. She also convinced me to get this dog off all commercial garbage to buy organically. Yes, this gets expensive but if it's not organic meat then at least have the label say, "hormone, antibiotic, steroid free"--this is really organic except for the label stating that it's organic which is very, very expensive for companies to obtain.

I was so impressed with this company that my mentor works for that I too, became a rep. If you want my link or much more info, write back to me at DazzlinDaawg@aol.com. I will help you as much as I can and I will refer you to my mentor. She charges NOTHING and just wants to help. She is quite brilliant when it comes to natural healing and Ihope you take advantage of her services--mine too. I have three dogs, two of whom have been very, very ill and diet and supplements (not from Walgreens or even some health food stores!)now have them on the right road. I am thrilled. Let me hear from you. Sue aka DazzlinDaawg@aol.com
