Question

HI!
I have a 5 year old-ish beagle that has a sensitive stomach. she seems get gassy and vomits about once every couple months. The vet said to give her Pepcid, but I really think she is in a contestant state of distress to a lesser degree all the time and I see direct relations to food. I want to change her to a food that will be good for her and that she will like and that will not upset her stomach so much. She loves and tolerates people meat, but I cannot afford that. The problem is,  my husband and I have lost our jobs a year ago and we are DIRT poor right now so I cannot go to the vet and spend 25 dollars on dog food, I just can't. Then again, I hate giving her the crappy grocery store stuff that is not only bad for her but I am sure is not helping her stomach.
Can you recommend a specific food that will be nutritious, easy on her stomach, and not break my wallet? I know this is a tall order, but I have done hours and hours of Internet research and it seems everyone thinks what they sell is the best....hard to trust that, you know? I am so hoping you will tell me that Science Diet or something inexpensive is okay. Maybe if you can give me an idea of what to feed her for a few months, then I could switch to a better food? Right now she eat Beneful by Purina and I know it is a crummy food but she like it and it doesn't give her too much gas. Thank you for any help you can give me. Brandy and I appreciate it!

Answer
Hi Diana,

I'm not a fan of the Science Diet line of foods. For the price of Science Diet you can get much better foods.

When I look for a commercial food I'm looking at quality of ingredients and bio-availability of nutrients. For example corn is a big ingredient in many lower quality foods. Dog food companies will say that corn has x amount of protein. That's all well and good but who cares if you've got an ingredient with a lot of protein when whatever will be eating it can't absorb that protein? All that corn is ending up right back on your lawn.

If you've got a Costco nearby the Kirkland brand of food sold there is a good middle of the road food that's easy on the budget. Another one would be Chicken Soup For The Dog Lover's Soul, yep its a book and a dog food.

Other high end foods include Wellness, Orijen, Solid Gold and Natural Balance to name a few. The initial sticker price of some of these can be a bit shocking. The thing to remember is that you're getting more bang for buck with these foods. Because they use ingredients that your dog can actually use you'll often feed less of these foods than you would a lower quality food. It can work out that you're spending the same or less on these foods than you would lower quality ones. Plus since your dog is digesting more of what it eats, less of this food is wasted in lawn deposits.
