Question
QUESTION: I just recently lost my 1 year old black lab to cancer(lymphoma) and we had just gotten a new playmate for him prior to the diagnosis. The puppy(champ) who is 4 months old now has, after Mac's passing gotten an insatiable appetite he will eat anything including my fiances 14 year old toy poodle senior chow if we don't catch him in the act. His housebreaking is still going well no accidents in probably a week and his obedience is good with the exception of some minor chewing. i was wondering if maybe the newly found appetite could be brougt on by depresssion?

ANSWER: It is quite common for Labs to be real chow hounds.  I have seen names go on from Hoover to Kerby and Eureka. I doubt there is much going on except typical lab behavior.

QUESTION: Why should I get my pup nuetered at 6 months.

Answer
As your dog matures over the next few months, it may develop some undesirable behaviors.  These include mounting, marking, and one of the worst is roaming.  When a female comes in season up wind, he may go berserk.  He could bolt out the door between your legs, jump the fence, or other unexpected ways of getting loose.  Once loose he will head off towards the female heedless of traffic.  He could get into a fight.  Animal control could collect him costing you plenty to get him back.  He could mate with the female getting an infection or siring an unwanted litter.  We are slaughtering millions of dogs every year for lack of homes.  If all the dogs that aren't part of a serious breeding program were spay/neutered, it would eliminate the misery.
