Exercising a puppy

Question
Hi. We have a 15 week old beautiful black labrador puppy. We have heard that
it is possible to over-exercise lab puppies which could result in future hip
and leg problems. She gets 3 - 4 walks a day. 1 of which is usually about 45
mins - 1 hour, involving running around off lead in a field. The others are 10
- 20 minutes each. She LOVES being outside and never seems over - tired, so
we have been lead by her.... but now worry that this may be too much? I
would really appreciate your opinion. Thank you.

Answer
I don't think that should be a problem.  Don't push her when she lags.  One of the worst things you can do is feed too much of too rich of a diet.  You should be feeding a puppy chow now.  Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. The dry dog foods are actually better for the dogs.  It helps keep the teeth clean, and exercises the jaws and teeth.  If you feed a complete dog chow, you shouldn't need to give the dog anything else.
