Question
Hi,
I have a 3 yr old black lab & Pyronese? mix. Looks like a yellow lab. We are looking for a young labrador puppy to keep her company and play with. We do not know if a male or female would be best. We do know she will be the alpha. She loves my friends 2 mix breed male dogs... just know if one sex might be better than the other.
Appreciate the info,
Diane

Answer
As long as they are spay/neutered, a male and female are the least likely to be a problem.  At 3 years old, she may not be interested in puppy biting games.  Many adults aren't if they haven't played with puppies regularly.  You might do better to find an older dog.

One of the best sources for dogs with a predictable personality is the rescue
dogs.  These are dogs that lost their home, but were taken into a foster home
to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for them.  You may
find a rescue near you starting at http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm  The rescues charge a fee to help cover their expenses, but is much less than the price of a puppy plus all its medical expenses the first year.
