New dog?

My black lab of 8 years died suddenly in the middle of the night. At about midnight she was breathing heavily, shaking, and looked as if she had seen a ghost. By 5 in the morning she was dead. I was wondering how long to wait to get a new dog. Is there precautions for the new puppy I should take, or was it just something wrong with the previous dog? She was fine the whole day. We do not have any rat poisons either, and our yard is secure. I want to get a puppy as soon as possible. Can I? I'm over the grieving part.

Hello...if that was my dog I would have taken her into the 24/7 vet's as that is very not normal and 8 is rather young to die. You can get the puppy anytime but first you should be sure your older dog didnt have any serius illnesses that could be spread to a young puppy...if you can not get an optospy just bleach everything in sight and throw out your old dogs things(most like to keep the collar and leash thou) and buy new ones for the puppy.
