Lab needs to lose weight

Question
I have a 7 yo neutered yellow lab.  He is on Kirkland brand lamb and rice diet.  This formula seems to be the best at preventing hot spots which he has a tendency to get.  As my Barkley is getting older he has put on a little weight and could stand to shed about 10 pounds I am wondering the best route to go about this.  At his last check up the vet told me he needed to lose a little and I don't want to make any long term issues for him and his joints.  Any direction on how to put a dog on a diet would be great.  Thanks

Answer
There isn't too much to it, just start feeding him less.  If you are feeding him maybe 4 cups, cut back to 3.  Keep track of his weight.  I don't think you want a rapid weight loss, a couple of pounds a month may be good.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
