Question
(5 month old male Lab-not yet neutered)
I was told by a vet that a puppy can't get hip dysplasia, he must be born with it. The breeder says you can over exercise a pup and he will develop it. I am concerned not so much with over-exercise but with up and down steps, on and off the bed and couch. Do you think these activities add too much stress to the hips?
May I also ask at what age do you think nuetering is best?
Thank you so much for your help and expertise.

Answer
Hip dysplasia is mostly genetic.  it is a failure of the hip socket to fully develop.  Diet is a factor along with weight. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4-5 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Excessive exercise is more likely to cause soft tissue damage.  You do want to avoid excessive running and jumping.  Steps are fine, but jumping off th ebed or couch could be a problem.

There is a lot of argument over the age to neuter.  I support the traditional 6 months, although sooner doesn't seem to create problems  In general, going along with when your vet wants to do it is a good idea.  http://www.avma.org/animal_health/brochures/spay-neuter/spay-neuter_brochure.asp
