How old can you spay a dog??

Question
I have a 4 year old Chocolate Labrador. I have heard that having her spayed will be good for her as it reduces the risk of cancers? Is she too old?

Answer
No, it is common to spay breeding stock after they are retired at 6-8 years old.  While there is some mixed information about the benefits of spaying before maturity, every thing I have ever seen suggests spaying after maturity is best for the long term health of the dog.  I would contact the vet soon.  If she starts to come into season, you may have to have her go through it before a vet will spay her.
