Question
QUESTION: A friend wants to give me her 1 year old yellow lab, but the dog is inbred. She is the puppy of a mom and her own male puppy. I am concerned that their are potential probs. Please address this.

ANSWER: What potential problems are you concerned about?  The only problems will happen if you try to breed the dog.  If she is not spayed, make sure she gets spayed.  Otherwise, she'll be just as good a pet as any other dog.

QUESTION: I heard they are more prone to heartworm and hip problems. I will not plan to breed her. Thank you so much

Answer
Regarding the HW, no that's not true.  Heartworm is spread via mosquitos and there is no genetic link whether one dog will get it or get is worse compared to another.

Regarding Hip Dysplasia, the chances are just as high with an inbred dog as a dog from somewhere else.  The key is were the parents', and the grand parents', and the great grand parents' hips checked and results sent to OFFA (www.offa.org)?  Even breeding 2 parents with Excellent ratings and with pedigrees with dogs that have passed with excellent, good, and fair ratings (all considered passing!), each pup still has a 10% chance of getting the problem.

I am assuming the dog came from an accidental breeding vs. a planned breeding?  I am also assuming that her mother dog probably didn't get the Hip OFFA clearances done. It would really all depend on the pedigrees and clearances of all the dogs in the lines. If you don't notice any problems with the dog getting up and with running around now since it's already a year and fully grown, chances the dog is fine.  You could take the dog in for xrays from the vet, and they can do a preliminary look to see if everything looks satisfactory with the hips.

If you have the registered names of the mom and the son that bred her, you can look up clearances in the OFFA database.  If you want help with that, make your follow up question Private and I'll give you my email address to send me the names, and I'll do a little research for you.
