Question
Hi, my puppy dog Toby is a half labrador half staffy breed.
I was wondering if you could help me and my family? because we want to give him toys.. but every toy we give him, (including recently a 'supposedly indestructible' KONG toy).. gets chewed up and destroyed? Would you say this is a behaviour of the black labrador in him? he also loves digging holes.. which is why we want to give him toys so he doesn't dig holes.. but every toy doesn't last so we're stuck back at the begining.
he's about 8/9 months.. I think.. not sure.. but I know he's not one year old yet.
Thanks
~Katie

Answer
It isn't typical, but not unusual for Labs to destroy sturdy toys including Kongs.  I had a friend whose Lab destroyed $50 worth of Kongs and Nylabones in hours.  He ended up with nothing except a Nylabone Souper size Galileo for a chew toy.  They are about 7'' long and 3'' in diameter.  If you can't find them locally, you can order them on line at www.vetvax.com.  I have no financial interest in them, just a place I have had good experience with.

What is left of chewed up toys are dangerous, being swallowed and blocking the airway or digestive tract.  You might try some of the other, larger Nylabones and Kongs.  The larger the toy, the better it holds up.

The only thing I have ever heard of that I thought would stop the digging, is the 3 hour walk every day.  I don't know that it would work.  I doubt many have the time to try.  At least while he is chewing, he can't be digging.
