Question
My son has a black lab/ mix 10 month old puppy who has hip displasia, he can not afford the surgeries that were suggested.  We have him on Ester c and joint support.  Do you have any other advice? These don't really seem to be helping him.  He also has has just start to cough like he has a hair ball, is this related? Thanks

Answer
Sorry to hear about the puppy.  You can look into a product called Trixsyn http://www.trixsyn.com/  It's supposed to really help with joint problems.  You won't see a HUGE difference with glucosamine and chondroitin, but they are working to keep the joints healthy.  You can add MSM (1000 mg daily) to help with pain.  You can talk to your vet about monthly or quarterly injectionis of Adequan.  That's about all you can do without surgery.  Oh yeah, and keep the dog AS LEAN as possible!

Regarding the cough, has nothing to do with the joint issue.  I would take the dog to the vet and tell them you suspect Kennel Cough.
