getting a lab home

Question
QUESTION: Hey

I am planning to get a lab retriever home. I am in love with the dog but am apprehensive about getting it home. Actually the thing is that I live alone and will be out for work from 6 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. Is it alright for the puppy to stay home alone all this while?

ANSWER: I would not recommend a puppy unless you can afford to have someone come during the day to walk the dog once.  Otherwise it is very unfair and hard on the puppy, plus it will be hard to house break it.  You may want to consider finding an older lab that will enjoy napping all day while you are gone and then happy to have company at night.

QUESTION: i got your reply.....so you mean that if someone come in between when i am gone for work to take him for a walk or i come home for 10-15 mins or so....that would be fine.....i ask so coz after i come back home i will be with him throughout till next morning......and taking him for walks in the morning and evening is also not an issue....

ANSWER: Yes, a break for the puppy in the middle of the day for a short walk to relieve itself would be great.

QUESTION: so you mean if me or a friend of mine can come in between, its ok to keep a lab considering the fact that i will be away for close to 9-10hrs a day(6am to 4pm). However after 4 I have all he time for him.Long walks and lot of games everyday. So if i get one home, will it be fine for him or harsh on him....

Answer
It does not matter the breed of dog.  If you want a puppy and want it to learn correct potty behavior, you will need someone to come in half way during your work day to allow it some time to relieve itself and some human companionship.  If you cannot find a friend or cannot do this yourself, I do not recommend getting a puppy.
