Question
I am considering buying an AKC yellow lab puppy from a breeder whose father has excellent rating for Hip Dysplasia and mother is good.  Any concerns for the good rating since I am going to pay 975$?  Also, any advice in buying a puppy?  I do know it is not a puppy mill. Thanks!

Answer
The deeper you dig, the better.  I think the eye certification is CERF and there is EIC, exercise induced collapse.  Ask about cancer, bloat, allergies, food sensitivity.  How old are the dogs on back in the pedigree and how is their health?  How have other litters of the parents done?  Have you met the parents?

There is a wealth of info at http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/articles.html You can find a chart giving the odds of hip dysplacia for excellent x good.  Oh, yes, I think some of the links there lead to sites put up by kooks.  Have your crap detector on.

I would look elsewhere if you won't get the puppy by 7-8 weeks, http://www.apdt.com/po/news/docs/Messer_Nov06.pdf
