Question
hi there i have just rescued a Labrador 6 months of age and we have a 10yr old Labrador at home as you could probably understand the 6 month old pup is quite shy and has been quite traumatized about things that have happened to him however our 10yr old lab seems to be having some trouble getting on with the pup i can understand that he is protective over his tertiary now that they have already met is there any other techniques that would help me stop them from eventually attacking one another

kindest regards

Answer
Once past 3 years old, many dogs don't want anything to do with puppies, their sharp little teeth, and their biting games.  You need to teach the puppy to leave the older dog alone.  As soon as the puppy starts to focus on the older dog, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy.

The puppy is going to have to learn to leave the older one alone if it doesn't want to play.  You do need to let the older warn off the puppy, but stop him before it goes too far.
