Question
MY pure black lab is now 18 weeks old. he weighs around 35 pounds, he is currently on "science diet" he has 2 cups in the morning an 2 cups at night. I see him fine but other people say he is too big! when we got him his weight was 13 pounds at 1 month. so am i feeding him too much? is he overweight?

Answer
Neither I, nor anybody else on the net can say.  I can help you learn how to judge it yourself.  You are right to be concerned.  Being over weight and growing too fast is one of the worst things for a puppy at his age.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food adjusted to its individual needs. likely 4 cups a day is too much.  It is also time to switch to adult chow if feeding a puppy chow.  You want slow growth allowing him to develop sturdy joints for a long, active life.

By the way, stick with the Science.  It is what the highly respected Guide Dogs of San Hose feeds their highly valuable dogs.
