Answer
It's hard, just like when we want to do it, but at least we can control their diet and exercise better.

If the dog is not getting regular exercise, this is the time to start.  If the dog likes retrieving or playing ball, try to do something once or twice a day.  There is cool toy called the Chuck-It to help you throw a ball, which makes them do all the running, and you don't have to be good at throwing.  At least a walk once a day for a mile or so.

As far as food, take a look at what the dog is eating and how much.  The bag usually has a guideline.  First make sure you aren't feeding MORE than that.  My oldest male is about 100#, he's just a big dog, and he gets 1 cup of food in the AM and 1 cup of food in the PM, and I might add a tablespoon of canned or some leftover meat from dinner. If the dog seems overly starved, consider adding 1/2 a can of unsalted green beans to the kibble.  It adds fiber and "bulk" to what he's eating, so he thinks he's eating more.

And be forewarned, that this process can take several months. But it can be done.
