Question
Hi Labman,

No question here, just a big thank you! I e-mailed you yesterday about my puppy crying like crazy when I put her in her crate at night. Well, last night I put one of the crates I have on my nightstand next to my bed. I put her in and she started to whine and cry, but I put my had thru the opening and while petting her, I comforted her in a low calm voice and she was quiet within a few minutes! She woke me only once at 2:00 (for pottie break.) After that she started the whining again, but I did the same routine and actually got 6 hours of sleep!  Yeah! Thanks for the advice!

Answer
You are welcome.  Although we have actually had a few puppies that quieted down themselves, we have had too many of the traditional, traumatic first few nights.  It was one of those, when the puppy had the neighbors' dogs barking, in desperation I laid down in front of the crate.  Chloroform would have hardly worked better.  It is surprising such a simple thing solves an almost universal problem, with no other answer.  This is one trick I learned on my own. Even the service dog schools, normally the best source of dog info, don't know about it.
