lab ears not laying flat

Question
QUESTION: Our labrador retriever puppy is 13weeks old. We got her when she was 8 wks old and her ears laid the way a lab's ears should. For the past week or so, her ears have been laying so that they look as though there is a fold in the middle and they are not laying flat like they were. I hope that this makes sense. Instead of them being floppy and smoothly laying at the sides of her head facing forward and hanging loosely, they appear almost as though they are kind of scrunched and pulled up so that they sit high on her head.  Why would they do this?  She just doesn't look like a lab retriever with her ears like that.

ANSWER: My guess is that she isn't a purebred and her ears will end up semi erect or erect.  I see many carefully bred Labs with markings, long hair, and pointy faces, but don't remember any pure ones with semi erect ears.  I also see many known Shepherd crosses, and their ears usually are at least partly erect.  All puppies are born with ears that hang down.  The ears stand up later, sometimes much later in breeds that have erect ears.

How carefully did you check the breeder?  Many breeders fail to understand that they must continue to protect the female from accidental breeding even after she is bred.  Females will continue to breed with any male they get a chance through their fertile time.  This can mean a different dog sired the litter or even different sires for different puppies.

If her ears end up partly standing, you could check DNA, http://www.biopetvetlab.com/dnahome.htm http://www.wisdompanel.com/

QUESTION: Would all of the puppies in the litter have looked the same? They all appeared to be purebred labs. She does have some white and chocolate color on her paws - underneath, kind of in between the pads. Also, her coat seems to be quite soft. I know that labs coats are typically coarse. I find it very upsetting to think that someone would advertise and sell puppies that aren't what they are supposed to be.

Answer
The puppies are not necessarily all the same.  Some pure Labs have much softer coats than others.  She may not even know about a second breeding.  Many people breeding dogs don't know as much as they need to.  Many of them don't know near as much as they think they do.  I am very cynical about breeders.
