Questionmy black female lab is all of a sudden having difficulty getting up from lying to sit/stand position and ascending/descending stairs...figuring she is developing hip dysplasia but didn't think it would be so severe right away...she is 7 1/2 years old and has gained significant weight since she became an inside dog about 2 years ago...my vet told me to start her on glucosamine about 2-3 years ago but never was consistant with it...other than regular exercise to lower her weight and keep her active, is a visit to the vet necessary?
AnswerYes, a vet visit is necessary. Hip Dysplasia is NOT the only thing that can keep a dog from getting up. It could only be arthritis or worst case, sometimes dogs get bone cancers. A senior (once they hit 7, they are seniors) need regular exams and it would be a good time to get her full bloodwork checked...INCLUDING thyroid. If she has a thyroid problem, that could explain why she gained so much weight and being put on medication can help her lose weight along with exercise and moderating her food.
