Question
I have just got a yellow lab puppy, she is 8 weeks old. I have purchased a puppy pen for her to sleep in at night, it is big enough for her bed and there is lots of room for her to play with her toys. But when we put her in there at night she just won't settle, she howls and whines all night. We have only had her for 5 days but i would like to know will she get used to being on her own at night and settle down?, my partner said not to go down when she is whining as she will continue to do it but i feel so mean letting her get so upset. Do you have any advice?
Thank you
Samantha

Answer
One desperate night when our puppy had the neighbors' dogs barking, I found the solution.  At bed time, with a new puppy, I have found lying down in front of the crate like you were going to sleep and speaking softly to it, or singing, until it settles down and goes to sleep works very well. Follow the pattern, a period of active play, outside to eliminate, and then into the crate.

Note, many people find puppies do better in small crates.
