Black Lab odor

Question
I was told that a black lab has very oily shin, and the odor is heavy, more so on a black lab , than a golden. I'm thinking of getting a Black lab as a family pet, and having it inside part time. Is this true, about them leaving oil stains on furniture, and the smell on clothing?

Answer
Hello Linda and thank you for your questions,

No its not true at all. Labrador retreivers of all colors have oily coats but unless you don't wash them at at lest three tiems a year(no dog owner doesnt wash them at lest that a year) it wont be extremly oily and wont smell much at all. Dogs of all types smell most when they are wet either from rain/snow or after a bath I'm not sure why but thats when they smell most. I persoanly have a labrador retriver and a Jack russell terrier I think my russell smells more then my lab he is more oily to me. Oil stains? Never. The oil doesnt smell bad ifyou dont wash your lab or any dog for that matter for a few months and the dog is allowed to roll around outside and lay in grass/dirt ect. and then allow it on the couch you'll smell something thats for sure lol. But no to anwser your question they don't stink and wont leave oil spots, there coat is just naturally oily to keep them water resistant(wetting them down for a bath is harder then it should be some times once there adult coat comes in).

I hope this helps if you need anything esle don't hessitate to eamil again, Take care
